PILOT THERAPEUTICS, QUINTILES ANNOUNCE COMMERCIALIZATION ALLIANCE FOR PILOT'S NOVEL NATURAL THERAPEUTIC FOR ASTHMA

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. and RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. - June 26, 2001 - Pilot Therapeutics, Inc., a leading developer of natural therapeutics to treat chronic diseases, and Quintiles Transnational Corp. (Nasdaq: QTRN) today announced an alliance to commercialize Pilot's lead product, the first clinically validated natural therapy for people with asthma.

Under the agreement, Quintiles' commercialization unit, Innovex, would be able to become the exclusive sales services provider for Pilot's natural therapy for asthma, PLT 3514. Innovex's services would include hiring, training and deploying a sales force to promote the product to physicians for a five-year period. In addition, the agreement would enable Quintiles to be Pilot's preferred provider of pre-launch services and future clinical development services.

"The alliance between Pilot Therapeutics and Quintiles Transnational brings together two companies that are pioneers in their respective industries," said Floyd H. Chilton, Ph.D., founder, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Scientific Officer of Pilot. "Pilot is establishing a new model for the natural products industry by discovering and developing natural products in conjunction with two world-class medical centers - Johns Hopkins and Wake Forest University.

"PLT 3514, the first natural therapy for asthma, is supported by Phase I and II clinical trial data and will be promoted directly to physicians. Pilot's alliance with Quintiles provides us access to the outstanding commercial capabilities of Innovex, creating a synergy that we believe will dramatically change the natural products industry."

The alliance agreement also calls for PharmaBio Development, Quintiles' corporate ventures group, to provide Pilot a milestone-based, convertible line of credit to support its near-term development and pre-marketing needs. Based upon the results of the pre-launch sales forecast and approval by a joint marketing committee of Quintiles and Pilot representatives, PharmaBio Development also would share the expense of the Innovex sales force for PLT 3514 in return for royalties on sales for a seven-year period following launch.

Richard Johnson, M.D., Chief Executive Officer of Quintiles Commercialization North America, said: "Our commercialization alliance with Pilot is breaking new ground in the promotion of natural therapies to physicians, which I believe has tremendous potential. We look forward to applying our full commercialization expertise to meet market demands for clinically validated natural therapies."

Asthma afflicts more than 17 million people in the United States and accounts for 10 million physician office visits annually. Pilot expects to launch PLT 3514 as a natural medicine early next year.
