QUINTILES AND ARGOMED SIGN STRATEGIC SERVICES ALLIANCE TO COMMERCIALIZE MEDICAL DEVICE FOR PROSTATE TREATMENT
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. - May 2, 2001 - Quintiles Transnational Corp. (Nasdaq: QTRN) and ArgoMed Inc. today announced a strategic alliance to commercialize ArgoMed's Thermoflex™ Water Induced Thermotherapy (WIT) System used for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Under this arrangement, Quintiles, through its corporate ventures group, PharmaBio Development, will provide ArgoMed with a convertible line of credit to establish a sales force to launch and promote the Thermoflex System in the United States. The arrangement also calls for Innovex, Quintiles' commercialization unit, to deploy the sales force in regions designated by ArgoMed. In addition, PharmaBio has agreed to make an equity investment in ArgoMed.

"This alliance with ArgoMed is another example of how our corporate ventures group delivers business solutions where strategic investments with innovative partners can help create new and significant treatments for patients," said Quintiles Transnational Chairman Dennis Gillings, Ph.D. "At the same time, the expertise of Innovex, our commercialization unit, can help maximize the impact of this important new device. This agreement adds to the momentum that Innovex has created in servicing the medical device industry."

Richard B. Klein, president and chief executive officer, ArgoMed Inc., said: "This alliance allows us to use the considerable resources of Innovex, the premier commercialization resource, in order to help make a minimally invasive procedure more widely available to patients in the United States."

ArgoMed has obtained clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to market the Thermoflex System in the United States for the treatment of BPH. Currently, Medicare reimbursement for use of the Thermoflex System to treat BPH is available in state programs covering more than 50 percent of the urologists in the U.S., and ArgoMed is working toward receiving approvals in the remaining states.
